Nursing Hub
The Islington Nurse Hub is a service designed to recruit and train new General Practice Nurses, as well as provide training opportunities for existing Islington nursing staff with the aim of improving retention of nursing staff.
General practice nursing faces many pressures which are exacerbated by a shortage of nursing professionals. The Islington Nurse Hub recruits qualified nurses who are looking to either begin their career in, or transition to, general practice. These trainees sign up to a Foundation General Practice Nursing course with one of a few London based universities. The course lasts for 6 months and is a mix of theoretical and practical learning. The practical learning is carried out in Islington practices under the supervision and guidance of our Clinical Nurse Educators who are hugely experienced General Practice Nurses with an interest in education.
The service is commissioned by the North Central London Integrated Care Board and appointments can be booked for any Islington practice registered patient by their usual GP surgery.
The service operates out of up to 5 practices at any one time with the bases rotating throughout the week. The nurses have full access, with consent, to patients’ medical records so that the care they provide is fully informed and the best it can be for their patients. The nurses also provide clinic cover for Islington practices so that established nursing teams have the opportunity to attend training and development courses without disadvantaging the patients of their practice.
The service model enables holistic training of new General Practice Nursing with one-to-one training whilst simultaneously providing additional nursing appointments for the patients of Islington. The ethos is simple: More nurses, more support for nurses, more appointments for patients.
