The Get Ready for Work: GP Employment programme is delivered in partnership with Islington Training Hub, Islington Working/ iWork Health and Adult Community Learning (ACL).

This is an employment programme to support Islington residents get into work and develop skills tailored for a reception or administration role in general practice. Additionally, it supports Islington GP practice with recruitment to address their workforce needs.

 
 
  • The Get Ready for Work: GP employment programme is for Islington residents who would like to get into work.

    The programme will support participants to develop employment skills needed for an entry-level role in primary care.

    Entry requirements:

    • A form of identification, such as a driver's licence.

    • Proof of residency in Islington, such as a household bill no older than 3 months old.

    • If you are not a UK national - a document, such as a biometric residency card, to confirm that you have permission to stay in the UK.

    • If you are in paid employment and earning less than £25,642 per gross annum, e.g. a payslip or universal credit statement no older than 3 months.

    • Have Functional Maths and English.

    • Interested to work in GP Administration/Receptionist roles.

    • Basic DBS Check - the cost of the DBS check will be covered by the programme.

  • Participants will attend training one day per week with the Adult Community Learning Centre for 11 weeks.

    Training will cover:

    • Communications Skills - Confidence skills, managing conflict and communication skills.

    • Basic IT / Computer skills - EMIS training, Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Primary Care and Care Navigation training.

    • Equality, Diversity & Inclusion - Principles of equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

    • Administration Services - Developing professional relationships with colleagues.

    • Employment skills and support - CV writing skills and interview skills.

    • Getting Job Ready - Interview process, pre-screening and employment seeking.

  • The programme is delivered over 11 weeks by Adult Community Learning.

    Training will take place online and face-to-face delivered by expert training facilitators. Classes will normally take place on Thursdays every week between 10:00 - 14:00. Please note that exact days and timings will be confirmed at the start of each cohort.

    You will learn as part of a cohort by watching videos, interacting through activities, questions and learning from others by taking part in the discussions that accompany each step

    There will also be work placement for two days per week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) over a four-week period to support learning and skills needed for working in a healthcare setting. The host GP practice and participant can agree on the placement timings to accommodate the practice, it’s recommended a mix of morning and afternoon sessions to a maximum of four hours per day.

    Prior to work placement, trainees will have access to pre-placement employability training, including IT and customer service skills, delivered by Adult Community Learning.

    All participants will need to complete a DBS check and a screening process carried out by Islington iWork, before starting the programme and work placement.

  • Learning outcomes:

    At the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

    • Understand the processes for patient registration at a GP Practice.

    • Understand the IT systems used by a GP Practice reception team.

    • Understand the key values and skills needed for a reception and administration role in general practice and other healthcare settings.

    • During the programme participants will be supported throughout by the iWork team and the training facilitators.

    Certification:

    After completing all the teaching and placement elements of this programme learners will receive a Level 2 Award in Customer Service.

  • Participants will have the opportunity to search and apply for vacancies at Islington GP practices or other healthcare settings.

    The Islington Working/iWork team will support participants transition to work.
